Craig T. Nelson
Chronic pain Syndrome sufferers Visit Doctors on average, 12 times a year with little or no relief.
How many of us get a negative reaction from our friends and family, when ask, "why are you disabled ?" The answer we give elicits responses ranging from raised eyebrows, to negative comments. We generally don't respond truthfully. A friend of mine, who has a masters degree in psychology, and is a male nurse, has tried to get into that age old argument with me, "my pain is worse than yours".
How many times have you heard, "It's all in your head"!
How many of us have had good days, and lied about it because the response from friends, and family was, "good you can build that porch now, or something else. I guess what I'm asking is,"are you afraid to say your having a good day, because people think your back to normal"? My wife and kids have had a rough time trying to understand my situation. Doctors will try to treat the cause, bad back lets operate, or another MRI at 1000+ dollars a pop. Lets try some psychotherapy, or new meds.
When you go to a doctor you want some relief, in desperation you look for miracle cures, and finally, when you realize there are no miracle cures, you withdraw from family, friends and life.
You may take more medication than you can handle, or become impossible to live with. This, my friend is the negative psychology of chronic pain. And it gets worse!
You are building stress. And with that stress comes pain, and as I said before, with the pain comes more stress.
Stop! There is a way out.
I was injured in 1987 by falling out of a chair.
The Final result after 3 surgeries and what seemed like a life time of physical therapy,
Doctors threw up their hands in defeat.
I changed Doctors 5 times, with little or no results until I finally found a young doctor,
in his early thirties, who practiced modern medicine. To compound my problems, I am an
Insulin dependent Diabetic. Any of you out there who have diabetes, know that pain is not
helpful to an insulin program. Also as a diabetic the healing process is slowed down
considerably. My new Doctor, after several examinations including another MRI and some
nerve conduction tests, which showed massive nerve damage on my right side, suggested a Pain
Manage Therapy Clinic. He told me that I would never be pain free, but with the proper
help and much work on my part, I could learn to live with it. Well what's to lose? So I
agreed to this off the wall (In my humble opinion) treatment.
